To the Representatives and Senators that represent the Great State of Florida:

    Florida is home to millions of convicted former criminals. Many of these ex-convicts have served their time and paid their dues to society in hopes of a better life. Many of them also have children and families to care for. With current Florida laws, there are no legal protections for these reformed law-abiding citizens in regards to employment. Employers can dig up records from as early as 18 years of age. When a 40-year old man or woman applies for a job, they have to answer for something that may have occurred many years ago, and they are likely a well-qualified individual who is looking to put their past behind them. There are numerous states that limit the time frame in which a company can search with a person's background. It is time for the laws to change. People need to have hope that they can live a better life, and not be stuck in an endless cycle of crime due to the hardships they face because Florida law is so unforgiving, They have paid their dues, and their punishment should end after a certain period of time. Therefore, we, the people of Florida, respectfully request a 10-year limit on employer background checks. 10 years is ample time for someone to prove their character to society.
