In-Person Graduation for Florida Colleges & Universities
In-Person Graduation for Florida Colleges & Universities
The Issue
The Florida Board of Governors has directed all state universities to develop alternate plans for fall commencement ceremonies. Many of the Florida's universities have developed a plan to abstain from in-person ceremonies. Graduation ceremonies are a time of celebration and mark a new chapter in life. Taking this away is a huge let down not just for the student but for parents, grandparents, brothers, sisters, extended family and friends.
Florida is now in Phase 3 of Reopening this means a restaurants, sporting events and theme parks can be at full capacity. For example, the Miami Dolphins football games have been approved to host 65,000 people. How can this be allowed but universities can not come up with a creative way to host a graduation ceremony?
The Florida Board of Governors and university officials must allow for in-person graduation.
Here is an email sent to all UCF students graduating this semester.

Dear Fall Graduate,
The Florida Board of Governors has directed UCF and all state universities to develop alternate plans for fall commencement ceremonies. While UCF will be unable to host a traditional face-to-face ceremony for our fall graduates in December, we are committed to ensuring that our students’ accomplishments are celebrated.
We understand that commencement ceremonies are a major milestone in the lives of our graduates and the loved ones who have supported them on their education journey. UCF is exploring additional ways to improve our virtual ceremonies to include memorable experiences for graduates.
We will share more information on https://commencement.ucf.edu as soon as it’s available.
Cap and gown rentals continue to be available for students who would like to take photos in their gowns. Alternatively, Herff Jones will refund students who prefer to cancel their cap and gown order completely.
More information about commencement and reimbursements will be made available at https://www.ucf.edu/coronavirus/ and https://commencement.ucf.edu/
