PARROTS in poorly run rescues need our help desperately.

The Issue

CALL TO ACTION Governor Ron DeSantis We Need You to Care! Please Help!

We, the undersigned, oppose the lack of laws and regulations governing the neglect of parrots in sanctuaries and rescues. Because there are not adequate laws, many parrots are living in deplorable, dirty, and unhealthy conditions and not receiving or are receiving minimal or late medical care and treatment. These conditions create a living environment conducive to fostering disease, illness, and self-mutilation.

Though many facilities pass local, state, and federal agency inspections, the regulations are vague when it comes to bird rescues. Additionally, many investigators are not well versed or trained in avian husbandry, avian diseases, and avian infectious diseases.  It is our assumption investigators do not investigate all buildings or spaces, and due to their inexperience in avian husbandry, they may overlook signs of animal abuse leaving the parrots to continue to live in horrid conditions.

The protection of animals is defined as preserving their life, health, and good condition, protecting them from inhumane, cruel, and callous treatment, ensuring appropriate care and living conditions, consistent with their physiological and behavioral characteristics. We, the undersigned, want clear and detailed laws and regulations that meet the definition above to include the following.

1.    Direct a thorough investigation into avian/ animal neglect/abuse and nonprofit fraud using personnel trained in avian husbandry, diseases, and infectious disease.

2.    Direct a state commission to strengthen the avian/ animal abuse /neglect investigative procedures and laws to bring abusers to justice.

3.    Find some way to budget for the training of FWC personnel in avian husbandry and hire additional staff trained in these areas.

Help us take care of these wild animals in captivity by ensuring Gov DeSantis and the FWC train agents in avian husbandry.
