Make RWU technology allow preferred name email changes for transgender students

The Issue

Roger Williams University has revealed its true colors. IT has been refusing to allow transgender students to have their chosen names reflected in their emails since they have ever started. One student who graduated in 2019 was able to gather an 'alias' email that had all mail forwarded to a new account for her chosen name. Ever since, the policy has become that the students in question must have a legal name change in order to get a new email - not an alias. a new one - created for them.

This is an extremely problematic 'policy' for a number of reasons. This is transphobic and classist. Not every student has the money to have their name legally changed, nor the supporting family that comes with the process. It also allows for students to be 'outed' as trans, especially for those who have first names that first letter differ from their legal names.

Personally, I have been waiting for over two years to get my email changed to reflect who I am. Why is it that I am able to change my name on Bridges simply, but can't get an email to reflect that? They have shut out all of our allies in the staff, so it's time for the students to speak up.

Isn't college supposed to be the place where students find who they are? College is supposed to nourish growing minds, not shut them down just because they're new and different.

We should make RWU change their policy for the better. Students should be allowed emails that match the name they wish to go by. This shouldn't be an argument. This should be provided.

The Decision Makers

Roger Williams University
In response to the recent petition on Chosen Name email changes for transgender students, several years ago, RWU created a website addressing the university’s policy regarding Chosen Name - https://www.rwu.edu/academics/registrar/registrar-forms/chosen-name-policy This policy was not created by Information Technology, rather it had input from various staff members across the RWU community (the committee was led by the former VP of Equity and Inclusion). In addition to the VP, this committee consisted of members of the Registrar Office (both undergrad and law school), Student Life, General Counsel, and Information Technology. As you can see from the website, various pieces of the policy are related to IT matters, and we have been asked to follow the policy and assist students with any questions they may have. University leadership has been engaged in discussions relative to email identity and has subsequently revised the policy as it relates to email specifically for the RWU transgender community. While the option to change the email display name and email alias has existed for some time, RWU will now provide transgender students with a distinct RWU Google Account that reflects their Chosen Name. PLEASE NOTE: Once the new email is created, it is the student’s responsibility to log into your old RWU email account and set up mail forwarding. Setting up mail forwarding will allow you to use your email with your Chosen Name while ensuring you aren't missing important messages regarding financial aid, health updates, and other things that utilize legal names. Both RWU Google Accounts will still need to exist. For matters that involve the federal government like Financial Aid, your email using your legal name must be provided to the government. This also includes but is not limited to university login ID and official medical information. Thank you, RWU Management
