Why this petition matters

The city of Rock Springs prohibits its community members from having chickens within city limits.  City Ordinance 3-527, Certain Domestic Animals Prohibited-(a) It shall be unlawful for any person to keep or maintain within the City any horses, cows, pigs, sheep, goats, other domesticated livestock, CHICKENS, geese, or other domesticated fowl except where the property upon which the animal is to be kept or maintained is properly zoned for such use, the use is one for which a person has received a permit which had been issued by the City.

I care so much about this cause, because during the pandemic, I knew it would be beneficial and cost saving to get some egg laying chickens to help feed my family. During the current Food Chain Shortages and increased nationwide inflation, it has really saved my family a ton of money and we are able to just go in our backyard to get fresh eggs! There has been several instances where there are no eggs at the store at all, especially over the last 3 mos.

I have a total of 12 chickens now in my backyard. On March 1, 2022, A not-so-nice neighbor down the street from me called Animal Control to tell them I have chickens and she knew I wasn't supposed to have them. I was then contacted by Rock Springs Animal Control officers and given a written warning to remove my chickens within 1 week. Luckily for me it was City Council day and I petitioned them to try and change the ordinance and allow us to keep chickens. This has been a heated political battle within my town since 2013. At that time, several other community members petitioned the Council, and the issue was shot down. Even with overwhelming people in favor of the NEW ordinance and only a few opposed to it, it still was not passed.

My chickens have not only fed us but now they are our family pets! They know their names and come just like a little puppy would. Little "Ms. Chicken Nugget" is my buff colored Silkie chicken (pictured) and she is a family member now! They have an enclosed pen and coop with plenty of room for all of them. Always fresh water, feed and their favorite bug assortment and fresh veggie scraps in the summer. They are very spoiled, well-taken-care-of chickens.  I have not had one predator in my yard in 2 years. All of my neighbors on all boundaries of my home DO NOT not have a problem with the chickens. Please help my cause and sign the petition so more people can experience having backyard chickens! Thank you so much for your support!
