Induct George "Shadow" Morton

The Issue

George "Shadow" Morton was an influential Record Producer and Songwriter responsible for writing and or producing the hits of The Shangri-Las, Janis Ian, The Vanilla Fudge and others during the highly creative decade of the 1960's. He is credited with producing the iconic 17 minute long In A Gadda Da Vida with Iron Butterfly as well as the groundbreaking "Society's Child by Janis Ian in 1967. "Shadow" is often mentioned as a major influence in modern record production by his peers and musicians. George "Shadow" Morton passed away on February 14, 2013 in Laguna Beach, California. I got to know "Shadow" while doing my weekly Radio Program Whole 'Nuther Thing, he was a regular listener and would call me whenever I played a record he was involved with. Initially I thought he was pulling my leg but he would cite facts and relate stories only he would have knowledge of. As his nickname implies, he would call and then disappear for months at a time, this continued for 5 years or so until one day he said he would like to come on my show and discuss his work. I was dumbstruck and told him to name the date. He appeared on my program October 8, 2011 and entertained me and my audience for almost 3 hours with his stories and anecdotes. One thing that stands out in my memory is a twinkle in his eye and how much passion he had for "The Music". "Shadow" needs to stand among his peers as an architect of Pop Music and an unsung genuis.
