Re-naming Nathaniel Rochester Community School #3

Re-naming Nathaniel Rochester Community School #3
The Issue
“We believe that it is time for a change!”
“Bringing the gifts that my ancestors gave, I am the dream and the hope of the slave. I rise. I rise. I rise.” – Maya Angelou
Black Lives Matter across the globe, and for it to be prevalent in our neighborhoods for the black and brown children who attend the Rochester City School District a change needs to take place. We as community leaders, staff, parents and students are asking that the building named Nathaniel Rochester Community School #3 which bares the name of a former slave owner be removed and replaced with a name of the school community or pillars who have worked to reconstruct the civil rights community and brought great change to Rochester, New York. We also believe that buildings that are named after people who have dis-serviced black/brown and indigenous people should be removed as well.
Respectfully,
The Committee to Rename Nathaniel Rochester School #3
