Change the Robstown ISD Mascot

The Issue

The Robstown mascot is the "Cotton Pickers." In recent years, they've changed the logo to just a cotton boll, but the implication of the mascot still exists. I'm from a Mississippi family, my ancestors have picked cotton for generations. I don't think I need to iterate the connotations of what "cotton picker" means to the average American.

This petition is hopefully to help convince the Robstown school district to change its mascot after considering the racial and societal implications. The mascot is racist. Full stop. There is no other interpretation. No "school pride" comes into this. If you're unsure, ask any black person, "Would you feel comfortable playing for a sports team under the name of a "Cotton Picker?"

Robstown is a small town on the Texas Third Coast, but being a small town is zero excuse. Black and brown people have been used as unpaid and underpaid labor to pick material goods and food for generations. It's time to stop this now! The South Texas coast doesn't have a large black population, but it DOES have a large Hispanic population. Both populations have historically picked cotton, fruit, and vegetables for hundreds of years. It's time to stop exploiting the people who feed you.
