Today, 3/12/2020, Robert Runcie had a press conference where he stated how broward county schools were going to be run with the corona virus going around. He stated how field trips were to be cancelled, which sucks but makes sense, and how extracurricular activities are to be cancelled even though the regular school day is still to be effective. There is a HUGE issue with the way this issue is being treated. Many of us go to schools in Broward where there are thousands of students during the regular school day, some even around 5000. That provides a huge risk for COVID-19 to be easily transmitted among a humongous body of people. When students are at their after school activities it is such a small fraction of students who attend the normal school day. There is no more than 50 kids that would be together after school for a sport or club, yet during a normal school day hundreds are placed together in small hallways, courtyards, and cafeterias. Runcie places students in a dangerous situation and takes us away from one that provides an immense amount of less danger. It is so flawed that I, a fourteen year old student, would have to come up with something like this. An easy solution would to either cancel all school and activities altogether or to let us have our extracurriculars! Please sign this petition so the school board can hear from the people! We need what’s best for our health and education, without an unnecessary compromise.
