ROAD SAFETY : OUR RESPONSIBILITY

The Issue

Road safety is a crucial aspect of public health and urban planning, aimed at reducing the risk of road traffic accidents and their consequences.

Global Impact: Road traffic accidents are a leading cause of death and injury worldwide. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), approximately 1.35 million people die each year as a result of road traffic crashes, with millions more sustaining serious injuries.

Here are some major key points which have a negative impact on ROAD SAFETY:

                                              HUMAN ERROR

  • HIT AND RUN

A hit and run accident happen when a driver collides with another car, a pedestrian or property and then speeds away from the scene without exchanging insurance information with the affected party providing aid to the injured, etc.

PUNISHMENT: 10 years of imprisonment under the BNS 106 and a fine of 7 Lakh.

Solution: People are not aware of the rules and regulations regarding HIT AND RUN cases. Government should organize Road Rules Awareness camps in which they will be told about

" In which ways STOPING at an accident caused by you will LEGALLY BENEFIT you."

BENEIFIT in the sense that if we will stop at an accident which is caused by us then the PENALTY might get reduced and if we speed away from the accident place then the charges of HIT AND RUN will be applied and the PENALTY would be more serious.

  • NO AWARENESS ABOUT ROAD RULES

Many people know the BASIC TRAFFIC RULES but still they don't follow them because they have developed such a mindset. Those people who seriously don’t know about these BASIC TRAFFIC RULES should be made aware about those RULES by T.V ads, social media and by organizing ROAD RULES AWARENESS CAMPAIGNS.

Solution: The MINISTRY OF ROADWAYS should organize camps in every school and college to make students aware about the BASIC ROAD RULES and educate them so that they won’t face the problems that we are facing. If the coming generation is literate then INDIA can become very successful regarding traffic and road problems.

  • WRONG SIDE DRIVING

In INDIA many people drive their vehicles on the wrong side to save themselves some time, but WRONG SIDE DRIVING is one of the major problems for accidents. They don’t understand the consequences of doing such crimes.

Punishment:  Fine of Rs. 500 to Rs. 1,000

Solution: Technology like SPEED CAMERA should be used to detect the front of the vehicle's number plates, by doing this E-CHALLAN's will be directly sent to the vehicle owner and the possibility of corruption gets eliminated.

  • DRINK AND DRIVE

Addressing the issue of drinking and driving requires a multi-faceted approach that includes enforcement, education, technology, and community involvement. Here are some comprehensive

PUNISHMENT: Fine of up to Rs. 10,000 and an imprisonment of up to six months. If the offence is repeated within a year, the fine can go up to Rs. 15,000 along with imprisonment of up to two years under SECTION 185

 Solutions:

 Legislation and Enforcement

  1. Strict Laws: Implement and enforce stringent laws against drinking and driving, including lower blood alcohol concentration (BAC) limits for drivers.
  2. Sobriety Checkpoints: Conduct regular sobriety checkpoints and random breath tests to deter and catch impaired drivers.
  3. License Suspension: Enforce mandatory license suspension for offenders to prevent repeat incidents.
  4. Zero Tolerance for Young Drivers: Implement zero-tolerance policies for drivers under the legal drinking age, making any detectable alcohol level illegal.
  5. Alcohol Detection: Every Toll Plaza should have a Alcohol Detecting Machine.

 Education and Awareness Campaigns

  1. Public Service Announcements (PSAs): Use television, radio, social media, and other platforms to run campaigns highlighting the dangers and consequences of drinking and driving.
  2. School Programs: Integrate education on the risks of drinking and driving into school curricula, starting from a young age.
  3. Victim Impact Panels: Organize panels where victims of drunk driving incidents share their stories to emphasize the real-life consequences of impaired driving.
  4. Community Workshops: Conduct workshops and seminars in communities to raise awareness and educate people about responsible alcohol consumption.

                                          ROAD CONDITIONS

  • CORRUPTION NEEDS TO BE PREVENTED NOT HIDDEN

Corruption plays a major role in negatively affecting our road safety

and road condition. Traffic enforcement is the most important requirement for road safety. It is threatened by the crimes.

Bribes are mostly demanded when rules are broken/ road users have committed an offence like: over-speeding, over-loading, non-road worthy vehicles, etc.

Solution: To detect and penalize speeding drivers, speed-fixing devices should be installed on the roads. To make drivers aware about speed limits.

Rules: The drivers who overspeed should not be allowed to use their vehicle for a period of time. Along with a heavy penalty and also do community service in that period of time.

Often politicians blame INDIA’s weather for poor roads, but Singapore and Vietnam’s weather is worse than INDIA. It rains throughout the year but their roads are completely different as compared to INDIAN roads.

WHY…?

The problem is not weather but corruption at every stage!

After years of effort a road constructing tender is issued and who gets the tender…?

One paying the highest bribe.

The tender cuts the bribe from the budget that was to be used in road construction.

The contractor takes his profit from the remaining amount.

The road is constructed in the remaining amount.

Delays, working in a hurry and negligence results in the formation of POT HOLES on the Roads.

Solution:  Preventive Maintenance

  1. Regular Inspections: Implement routine road inspections to identify and address minor road damage before it develops into potholes.
  2. Seal Coating and Crack Sealing: Apply seal coatings and fill cracks regularly to prevent water from infiltrating and weakening the road structure.
  3. Drainage Maintenance: Ensure proper drainage systems are in place and well-maintained to prevent water accumulation on roads, which can accelerate pothole formation.

  • IMPROPER TRAFFIC MANAGEMENT

Effective traffic management is crucial for reducing congestion, enhancing road safety, and improving overall mobility. Here are some comprehensive solutions for traffic management:

 Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)

  1. Traffic Signal Coordination: Implement adaptive traffic signal control systems that adjust signal timings based on real-time traffic conditions to optimize flow.
  2. Smart Traffic Lights: Use smart traffic lights equipped with sensors and cameras to monitor and manage traffic in real-time.
  3. Real-Time Traffic Monitoring: Deploy sensors, cameras, and GPS data to monitor traffic conditions and provide real-time updates to drivers via apps and digital signage.

 Infrastructure Improvements

  1. Road Widening: Expand roads and highways in high-traffic areas to accommodate more vehicles and reduce congestion.
  2. Dedicated Lanes: Create dedicated lanes for buses, bicycles, and high-occupancy vehicles (HOV) to improve traffic flow and encourage the use of alternative transportation modes.
  3. Roundabouts: Replace traditional intersections with roundabouts to improve traffic flow and reduce the likelihood of accidents.

                                          CONCLUSION

At last we should do the things that are in our hands:

  • Obey the Basic Road Safety Rules
  • Use helmet while on a bike and scooter
  • Use seatbelts in cars
  • Avoid over-speeding, over-loading, etc.
  • Safety ratings over price of a vehicle
  • Avoid distractions (MOBILE PHONES, CALL)

Vehicles/Drivers who have not exploited any law or who do not have any challan’s and who collaborate with the MINISTRY OF ROADWAYS or any NGO’s to spread awareness about ROAD SAFETY at least once a year should be rewarded with relaxation on ROAD TAX, TOLL TAX or should be rewarded with safety instruments.

It’s our choice and responsibility to drive safely and by doing so we are protecting us and our loved ones.
