Road Safety for Eridge Green

The Issue

To: Cllr Peter Pragnell (Chair) and Cllr Keith Glazier (Leader)

East Sussex County Council

we believe that the traffic in this Eridge Green section of the A26 is dangerous for pedestrians, cyclists horse riders, car users and particularly for disabled and elderly residents. It is impeding the use of public transport and Active Travel. For a number of residents, it is quite impossible to cross the A 26 between the 2 halves of the village, for example to visit the village hall or to use the bus. It is dangerous to walk or cycle along the road and dangerous for drivers turning right onto the A 26 from Sham Farm Road. Not only is there a problem of speeding on this section, but when drivers do adhere to the 40 mile-per-hour speed limit, the road layout still makes it too hazardous to cross. A proportion of drivers travelling up the bypass in the direction of Tunbridge Wells will not observe the reduction in speed limit to 40 mph. Many of these are very aggressive to any other road user who slows them from 60 mph, for example, drivers pulling out onto the A 26 in the 40 mph zone, from The Forstal or Sham Farm Road. That said, it is hazardous to cross the A 26 at Eridge Green even when cars are not breaking the speed limit. The occasional deployment of a mobile speed camera at Eridge Green has little effect. We, the residents, and other users of the road and public transport, would like ESCC to resolve these problems that are causing danger to local residents. These solutions must include a way for people to cross the road, a way of slowing traffic down and safe passage for cyclists, wheelchair users and walkers
