Petitoners, Supervisors Chuck Washington and Manny Perez will be hosting a Community Conversation about Short Term Rentals and the proposed new STR ordinance Monday October 3rd from 5-7pm at the Idyllwild Town Hall. This is our opportunity to show up and directly express our concerns about negative effects the unlimited growth of STR's have had, and continue to have, on our community.
Even if you do not care to speak know that just being there and showing your support is critical. Elected officials respond when the majority of their voters care about an issue. If you do care to speak (and we hope you do) here are the important current topics:
1) Density: we are being overrun by STR's. We would like to have a cap or other form of limitation on the number of allowable STR's. Palm Springs is the latest RivCo city to propose a cap. Their cap will be at 6.5% of all housing units. We have been asking the county for a very reasonable 10% so far without success, but they seem to be warming up to the idea.
2) STR Home Inspections: to ensure safety in our neighborhoods there needs to be actual physical inspections for each home that wants to operate as an STR. Fire extinguishers need to visible and working. The same with smoke detectors. The actual number of bedrooms need to be verified as does the number of on-site parking spaces. The latest version of the new ordinance appears to have dropped this requirement. It needs to be put back in.
3) Signs: there needs to be a sign in front of all operating and approved STR's with the person or entity responsible for the property and their contact number(s) placed in a location visible to the street. This requirement was in the initial draft but the Supervisors now seem willing to have the sign placed anywhere on the property which, if not visible from the street, does absolutely no good.
SO PLEASE MARK YOUR CALENDARS AND COME ON OUT TO THE MEETING.
