Require police officers in Riverside County to undergo annual psychological evaluations

Require police officers in Riverside County to undergo annual psychological evaluations
The Issue
Within the past 400 years, the Black community has faced oppression on many different levels. In many recent years, police brutality has been one of the largest issues the Black community has faced, and that police departments across the nation fail to address and fix. Additionally, many of the police officers that commit these injustices against the people they swore to protect are not charged or dismissed from their duty.
What we want from our police officers in our county, and later, across the nation, is for them to undergo annual psychological evaluations to ensure that they are suitable to continue to serve and protect on the police force. Most police officer applicants are required to undergo psychological evaluations to determine suitability before they serve on the force, but are no longer required to have psychological evaluations during their time on the force. As we recognize that police work is both dangerous and mentally tolling, we expect these officers to have these evaluation to recognize any issues with PTSD or perhaps prejudices. We would like the clinical psychologist to be an elected position, where people can elect from a council of possible candidates to ensure non-biased evaluations.
Furthermore, we feel that police officers must have knowledge and understanding of the districts they will be serving and protecting. In order to ensure this, we petition that our police officers must complete 100 community service hours, off-duty, in the districts they will be serving within their first year, and another 100 during their second year. We expect these officers to serve non-police affiliated organizations that reflect some of the most prominent struggles within the districts, so they can be better equipped to handle situations they are likely to encounter in their time of duty.
