Optional Uniform and Change in Sexist Dress Code for Lamar High School
Optional Uniform and Change in Sexist Dress Code for Lamar High School
The Issue
At Lamar High School, theres a dress code and a uniform policy. During COVID-19 we witnessed a change in these rules. Not many people were following or enforcing the uniform code, and I think we need more of that.
At Lamar we are on a mission. That mission should be embracing the students individualities and personalities. As a school we should be preparing our students for the real world. That world is a place where people can express themselves and wear what they want.
As for the dress code, the only thing that should be on it is “Don’t show your privates”. It shouldn’t be “dont wear your skirt too short” or “don’t wear spaghetti straps”. People argue that it’s “too distracting for the boys”. Women and young women alike should NOT be responsible for what boys think. Instead, boys should learn control. Women(and men) should be able to wear what they want(as long as it’s not breaking the law of public indecency).
The cons of wearing uniform and the cons of free dress can BOTH be solved if we let students decide what they want to wear. Weather that be the school uniform or what they have a home. We should be free too express ourselves and be individuals, but should also be free too get up in the morning and not worry about choosing an outfit to wear.
But what about expenses? What about distractions? What about violence against the lower class? Many parents actually argue that buying school uniforms is more expensive upfront. And distractions? They happen through other means, such as jokes and drugs. That can be solved if we shift everyone’s attention to clothing. And violence in gangs and violence against those who can’t afford certain clothes? That’s why there is a choice. Uniform or clothes at home. If they can’t afford uniforms we can solve that by donating clothes of ours to others.
