The issue

James and Katherine, the visionary founders of Rise Artisan Bakery, turned a dream into reality during one of the most challenging periods in recent history—the COVID pandemic. Recognising the potential in a neglected, 15-year-abandoned school-church building in the heart of Nairne's main street, they poured their hearts into transforming it into a vibrant bakery and community hub. Their unwavering determination and tireless effort not only revived the historic building but also brought hope, connection, and spirit to the Adelaide Hills.

Over the past five years, Rise Artisan Bakery has become more than just a business—it has become the soul of Nairne. It’s a place where locals and visitors gather, connect, and create lasting memories. From freshly baked food to heartfelt conversations shared over coffee, Rise embodies the essence of community spirit.

The sudden announcement of our closure by the building's owners, the Christian Outreach Centre (COC) in Queensland, has left us devastated and in shock. Despite our unwavering commitment and efforts to maintain this beloved space, the COC has chosen not to renew the lease, leaving the reasoning behind their decision unclear. This closure means more than 15 employees will lose their jobs on the 24th December 2024, Christmas Eve, and the community risks losing an irreplaceable gathering place. Rise is more than bricks and mortar; it embodies a legacy of hard work, resilience, and the heart of a town united by its shared love for a local treasure.

We refuse to let this closure be the end of our story. By standing together, we can fight for the future of Rise Artisan Bakery and preserve a place that means so much to so many.
