Rights For Intellectually Disabled Folks
Hello! I'm Charlotte Keller. Some of you may not know me so here's a bit about me. I'm 12, almost 13 years old, I live in Upstate New York, I enjoy playing sports such as football, field hockey, and golf, I collect video games. Oh yeah, and I have an older brother, Paul Keller IV. However when my brother was 3 years old, my entire family's life changed, as he was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (Commonly referred to as Autism or ASD). Our dreams of Paul getting his drivers license faded, as did our hopes of him going to college, getting a proper career, living independently, and many other things most adults wouldn't think twice about doing in their daily life. I'm worried, that by the time people like my brother graduate, there won't be enough rights for them, with few independent and interdependent living options, this could be a huge upcoming issue for disabled people in the class of 2022, and other disabled folks looking for stable living options. Social rights activist, Dorthea Dix has been warning us long before this for more rights for disabled people. She did so much, but the fight still isn't over. There are many talented disabled folks who's voices are often pushed to the side and marginalized. My family is very fortunate, as we have great options in New York to help support my brother, but not everyone has those privileges. Please consider signing this petition to put more disabled people into the spotlight to get the future that they deserve! And who knows? Maybe someone important will see this and help bring awareness to this enduring issue!
