Stop Ill-Conceived Fairgrounds Proposal to Build 1,500 Units for Homeless Mega Development

There is a proposal to build up to 1,500 modular units for the homeless at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. This proposal has been advanced by a little-known LA real estate developer, Fixx Solutions, with no track record in such projects to a mismanaged and financially desperate Fairgrounds. The public has been intentionally kept in the dark on the proposal and the details. This is not right. For homeless programs to be successful, they need to include dignified housing, a wide array of support services, convenient transit and transportation, credible management, and most critically, the strong support and input of the local community. This proposal lacks all these criteria. Finally, the proposal falls well outside the commonly understood mandate of California state fairgrounds and further pressures the ecologically sensitive flood plain of the San Dieguito River Valley. This proposal is deeply ill-conceived on multiple levels.

Homelessness is a serious humanitarian and social problem, and many of us are passionately committed to ending it, but this proposal is not the right way to go about it. This proposal does a disservice to the cause because it has had zero local input, has virtually no local support, and is a significant over-reach with an absurd 1,500 proposed units.

We need to let the Fairgrounds board and executive leadership know that this proposal is unacceptable for the surrounding communities. We also need to send similar messages to the City Councils and leadership of Del Mar, Solana Beach, Rancho Santa Fe, Carmel Valley, and Encinitas. If you agree, please sign this petition and forward on to others. Together, we can make our voices heard and terminate this terrible idea before it goes any further.
