Wayne Gretzky, one of the most celebrated figures in Canadian sports history, has unfortunately demonstrated what could be considered a betrayal to his country. By proactively backing an American threat of annexation, Gretzky has caused a contentious rift between his tremendous athletic legacy and his shocking political sentiments. According to data from the Angus Reid Institute, over 63% of Canadians are against the idea of annexation by the United States (Angus Reid, 2020). By supporting such an unpopular and divisive stance, Gretzky stands in opposition to the wishes of the majority of his fellow citizens. The Order of Canada, as our nation's highest civilian honor, should be bestowed upon individuals who exemplify the values and aspirations of Canadians — not those who seem to undermine them. We call on Governor General Mary Simon, the custodian of the Order of Canada, to consider the revocation of Wayne Gretzky's membership. This is not a castigation of Gretzky's unrivalled contributions to ice hockey. Rather, it is a stand for the sovereign dignity and unity of Canada in the face of undue external influences.
