The Issue

I write this petition with a passion rooted in personal concern. I fear for our children's safety in emergency situations within schools in Kenner, Louisiana - a place where a ban on cellphones currently stands. The prohibition leaves our children helpless in unforeseen events that may require immediate communication for help.

Moreover, a study by Pew Research Center found that 95% of teenagers in the U.S. have access to a smartphone, and 45% say they are online on a near-constant basis, illustrating the integral role technology plays in their lives (source: Pew Research Center, 2018). As such, it is critical to establish a clear, effective policy that balances the productive use of mobile phones without mandating a complete ban.

While concerns about possible disruption in classrooms are valid, complete prohibition is not the most practical solution. Necessary regulations can be put in place to prevent misuse during classes, while ensuring safety by allowing students to carry their phones.

If the current ban persists, our children may be left unable to reach out for help during emergencies, which could lead to avoidable tragedies. I urge you to consider the importance of our students' safety and to revoke the cell phone ban in Kenner schools. Sign this petition and let's ensure the safety and security of our children.
