The Issue

I have relied on my phone as a vital communication tool. Recently, a new policy banning phones in schools has been implemented, and it has deeply personal implications for me. If my parents cannot reach me during an emergency, the consequences could be dire. This policy puts students like me at risk and is more detrimental than beneficial.

In today's world, having a phone ensures students can contact their families when unexpected situations arise. Emergencies are unpredictable, and whether it’s a natural disaster, a lockdown, or a personal health crisis, being reachable is crucial. According to the National Center for Education Statistics, more than 70% of schools in the United States have recognized the importance of allowing students to have phones for this very reason.

Moreover, in today's technology-driven age, banning phones could hinder learning opportunities and lead to chaos rather than preventing it. Studies show that smartphones can be educational tools when integrated properly into the classroom environment.

The phone ban policy does not accommodate these realities. Instead, it creates a disconnect that could have severe consequences in emergency scenarios. Allowing responsible phone use, regulated and integrated thoughtfully into school protocols, can provide a safer and more connected school experience.

Let's urge Henry County's educational policymakers to reconsider this blanket ban. Proposing alternative solutions like designated phone zones or usage during specific times could maintain safety without compromising communication during critical times.

Join me in asking school officials in Henry County to repeal the phone ban policy. Sign this petition to help ensure every student's safety and connectivity.
