Growing up in a world where technology is deeply integrated into our daily lives, it’s hard to understate the value that our phones hold for us, especially as students in Missouri. The recent decision to ban phones in schools might be well-intended, aimed at ensuring that students remain focused during school hours, but it disregards the critical role that phones play in our personal and educational lives. **I strongly believe that while education is paramount, during non-learning periods such as lunches and passing times, we should be granted the right to use our phones. They are a powerful tool of communication and connection.**

For many students, their phones are more than mere gadgets; they are lifelines to the outside world. They help us keep in touch with our families, assist in coordinating plans with peers, and even provide a means to document our school life experiences. Restricting phone use entirely seems excessive, especially when used responsibly during non-instructional times, they do not pose a distraction.

The ways in which we communicate have evolved, and it’s essential that school policies reflect this evolution. A blanket ban on phones in all parts of the school day underestimates the maturity and ability of students to manage their usage responsibly. Moreover, studies have shown that brief technology breaks can increase focus and productivity. According to the PEW Research Center, 95% of teens have access to a smartphone, underscoring its role in their daily lives beyond simple entertainment.

Instead of a complete ban, I propose a balanced approach that allows students to access their devices during designated times such as lunch breaks and passing periods, while ensuring that phones are put away during instructional periods. This policy would still ensure a distraction-free learning environment while respecting students' needs to stay connected.
