Revoke the Outdated Dangerous Dogs Act of 1991

The Issue

I, alongside many others, have sadly observed the unnecessary execution of countless healthy, loving dogs over the years. Their only crime, falling under the breed-specific legislation imposed by the Dangerous Dogs Act of 1991 (DDA1991). This oppressive act, based not on hard evidence but on unfounded fear and misinformation, now stakes claim over yet another breed – the xl bully.

This law, while claiming to safeguard public safety, infringes upon our human rights and autonomy by unduly eliminating our freedom of choice when it comes to pet ownership. More critically, it completely dismisses the fact that a dog’s behaviour is far more influenced by the way it is reared, contrasting sharply with the notion of 'dangerous breeds.'

The act fails to consider the individual temperament or behaviour of the dogs it criminalizes, making it more of a knee-jerk reaction than a thought-out, effective policy solution. A more proactive approach would involve implementing legislation mandating responsible pet ownership, thereby promoting and reinforcing positive actions, instead of the current reactive stance that is focused only on breed type.

The Dangerous Dogs Act of 1991 no longer fits our present knowledge about dog behaviour, nor does it serve the best interests of dogs or people. Driven by personal experiences and a deep concern for both the rights of individuals and the welfare of dogs, I call for the repeal of this outdated act. Sign this petition and let's create a balanced law which is punitive on irresponsible owners, not innocent breeds.

It is evident that breed specific legislation does nothing to resolve the issue of attacks and these continuous knee-jerk reaction see animal welfare impacted. continuing to allow the DDA1991 to remain continues to miss-lead the public into believing that this lowers their chances of being attacked. we have come a long way in 30 year in understanding dogs and their behaviour it is time for change!
