The Issue

Floyd, a 9-month-old domesticated coyote, has become a beloved part of the Carver community. Raised by John McDade, Floyd captured the hearts of many as he joyfully ran alongside dogs at the local park, separated only by a chain-link fence. His presence not only serves as a source of education and wonder but also cultivates a spirit of harmony between wildlife and human life.

However, Floyd's life was turned upside down when the City Council of Carver passed a new animal ordinance that mandates his relocation. This ordinance doesn't take into account Floyd's unique upbringing as a domestic-bred coyote and the special circumstances that surround his existence within our community. Is it fair to uproot a creature that poses no danger and brings so much joy to residents?

The bond between Floyd and John is a testament to what can happen when humans and wildlife coexist peacefully. Floyd isn't just a "wild coyote"—he's a product of domestication, socialization, and mutual respect. Relocating him not only tears him away from his home but also from the person who loves and understands him the most.

What are the alternatives? Instead of forcing him to leave his home, we can adopt a measured approach, evaluating Floyd's unique needs and potentially granting an exemption to the ordinance on a case-by-case basis. This approach could ensure Floyd remains under the care of John McDade or allow him to live in a sanctuary that understands his domestic nature.

Allowing Floyd to stay in a familiar environment would benefit both him and the community. John McDade is willing to comply with reasonable conditions to guarantee the safety and well-being of both Floyd and the residents of Carver.

We call on the City Council of Carver to reassess its decision and seek an alternative that allows Floyd to stay where he belongs. By doing so, Carver can set a precedent for protecting animals that fall outside traditional categorizations, promoting both common sense and compassion.

Please sign this petition to support Floyd's right to remain at home and ensure a more humane resolution to this situation. Together, we can make a difference for Floyd and for many other animals like him, caught in the web of bureaucratic decisions.
