The Issue

The current no phones policy across Saint Louis Public Schools (SLPS) needs immediate reconsideration. While the intention behind this policy is understandable – to minimize distractions and promote learning – it inadvertently disregards the significant benefits that responsible phone usage can bring to our students.

In today's technology-driven world, smartphones are an integral part of daily life and learning. They not only serve as tools for communication but also as gateways to information, digital learning tools, and emergency contact points. Students with access to their phones can leverage educational apps, access digital libraries, and stay organized with scheduling applications. These benefits were notably evident during the COVID-19 pandemic when remote learning highlighted the necessity of technology in education.

Moreover, phones are crucial for ensuring the safety of students. In emergencies, having a phone allows a student to quickly contact family members or authorities. With rising concerns about school safety, it is indispensable for students to have the means to communicate instantly.

Instead of a complete ban, SLPS schools should adopt an approach that teaches and encourages responsible usage of mobile devices. Implementing lessons on digital citizenship and setting clear guidelines on phone usage during instructional and non-instructional times can create a balanced environment where students respect boundaries yet enjoy the benefits of technology. The punishment for cell phone use is also egregious. Many times, only one warning may be given before the device is confiscated for the rest of the day. This creates problems for students who check their phone out of reflex, and can lead to suspensions. This is not acceptable.

Let's call on the SLPS administration to rethink this blanket policy and consider the advantages of integrating smartphones as a supportive educational tool rather than viewing them solely as distractions. Encourage them to modify the policy to permit phone usage within controlled and educational contexts, so that students are better prepared for the future.

Sign this petition to urge SLPS Schools to reassess the no phones policy, promoting an educational environment that respects both modern technology and effective learning. Your support is vital in making a positive change for our students' learning experience and safety. Please sign this petition today to make your voice heard.
