The Issue

The decision to ban phones in schools directly affects every student in Howard County. Phones are not just communication devices; they are essential tools for education and safety. Several students rely on their phones daily to access educational and calendar apps to help manage assignments and stay organized. Additionally, phones provide a sense of security for families all over Howard County. They ensure a quick form of communication between students and parents in times of emergency or during schedule changes. Teachers also use phones for interactive learning purposes in our classrooms. Banning phones in schools would heavily disrupt these processes.

If this ban takes effect, students will lose a crucial resource that supports both their academic and personal lives. Without access to their phones during the school day, students may struggle with managing their assignments, expressing themselves through the internet, and reaching out for help in emergencies. The school environment could become more stressful as students are forced to memorize details without digital assistance. Experience with developing a responsible use of phones in schools is vital for preparing students for a connected and tech-driven world, which is fully undermined and prevented if this decision to ban phones moves forward.

This policy change in phone restrictions is set to go into effect on March 3, leaving little time to voice our concerns. Now is the time to act to show our school board that responsible phone use can coexist with educational priorities and that it is important that the voices and opinions of students are heard. We urge the school board to reconsider the phone ban by finding a more balanced solution with a more structured phone policy rather than an outright ban. By acting now, we can prevent this ban to go into place and preserve the benefits of phone usage in our school systems.
