Revoke sexist new ICC uniform rules for girls

Revoke sexist new ICC uniform rules for girls
The Issue
Petition regarding recent Ifield Community College uniform policy
We, the undersigned parents, carers, and community members, are concerned about the recent changes to the school’s uniform policy, specifically:
- Skirt length mandate – The sudden strict enforcement of knee‑length skirts disproportionately targets female students and places the onus on them to modify their appearance, rather than addressing respectful behaviour among all students. It also does not factor in the associated added costs and difficulty for parents in sourcing skirts (or trousers) which meet these strict guidelines, which is not easy for every body type and budget.
- Uniform inspections - the arbitrary requirement of skirt lengths being “just above the knee” is subjective to each staff member and could cause undue stress on females who are having growth spurts and could unnecessarily target a demographic that already notoriously struggles to feel accepted in their environment. Singling out those whose uniform does not meet an unspecified standard is asking for trouble. And for what educational purpose do we impose this on them?
- Sock colour requirement – While unbranded socks are understood as a matter of cost equity, it is unclear how the colour of socks impacts learning or school culture.
- Lack of transparency – These changes have only recently been enforced, prompting questions about what triggered them. Furthermore, the updated rules were not explained or reflected on the school’s website until the first week in September, leaving families with conflicting guidance.
We believe that:
- Uniform policies have their place but should be applied equitably and not reinforce outdated gender norms.
- Uniform policies should reflect the school “THRIVE” ethos, particularly the elements of being thoughtful, independent and visionary.
- Respectful conduct must be taught and expected of all students, with equal emphasis on male behaviour towards female peers.
- Policy changes should be communicated clearly, with rationale provided, and published promptly on official channels.
We respectfully request that Ifield Community College:
- Review the recent uniform enforcement in consultation with parents, students, and staff.
- Address respectful behaviour through education and enforcement, not solely through regulating the clothing of females.
- Ensure all uniform rules are equitable, transparent, justified, and accessible on your website.
