Our community in Pocahontas, Arkansas, is currently facing what feels like a significant instance of government overreach. The recent introduction of Ordinance No. 2024-19, which authorizes disconnection of water services if a customer is found violating certain city ordinances or statutes, has sparked widespread concern among us. This ordinance seems to infringe upon our fundamental rights to due process. We believe that the utility company should have limited reasons for disconnection, specifically for non-payment of bills, tampering with equipment, fraudulent activities, or refusing access where legally required. However, forcing residents to comply with all ordinances under threat of losing essential water services appears excessive and unjust.

Many citizens feel anxious and vulnerable under this new ordinance, fearing potential disconnection over minor infractions or misunderstandings. This is especially worrying for families and households that rely on consistent water service for their daily needs. The threat of such a severe penalty for potentially minor violations undermines trust and security within our community.
