The Issue

In the face of unimaginable tragedy, I find myself compelled to share the story of Dr. Erika Scholtes. This is a tale filled with pain and marked by the neglect of a woman who, being a medical professional herself, should know better than anyone the paramount importance of child safeguarding.

In our Arizona community, Dr. Scholtes not only grossly neglected her own children, but continued to support her husband despite his fatal negligence that cost their youngest daughter her life. She was left in a sweltering car while he isolated himself in their home to play video games. A horrifying insight into how grave the consequences of such callous disregard can be, in the United States, an average of 38 children die each year due to being left in hot cars (source: National Highway Traffic Safety Administration).

What's even more disturbing is that Dr. Scholtes had continued to stand by her husband, Christopher Scholtes, even when there were previous instances of the endangerment of their children. To add salt to the wound, she campaigned for his release, and was successful in her efforts - a man guilty of child homicide is now walking free among us, with her backing.

The main concern now lies with the welfare of their remaining children, already traumatized, who are still under the care of Dr. Scholtes. If this tragedy teaches us one thing, it is of the importance of never downplaying a situation where a child's safety is at risk.

To allow such a person to hold a medical license sets a dangerous precedent. Therefore, we ask for immediate consideration of the revocation of Dr. Erika Scholtes' medical license by the Arizona Medical Board. We cannot allow such endangerment to the welfare of children to go without consequence - it is for their protection, and that of our community, that we demand this action. Please sign this petition to ensure she faces serious repercussions for her actions.
