Revoke all contracts with Flock
The Issue
I'm sick and tired of being just another data point for profit-driven companies to exploit and sell. Over the years, surveillance technology has become more pervasive, and while it is often marketed under the guise of safety and security, it's important to scrutinize who gains most from it. Flock Safety has been collecting data without warrants, which completely bypasses our personal rights and freedoms, turning our private moments into profit margins. This egregious breach of privacy cannot continue.
Flock's expansive network of license plate readers is installed across countless communities, promising to deter crime, yet these systems also carry major ethical concerns. Gathering vast amounts of data about citizens' whereabouts is a significant invasion of privacy. According to the Electronic Frontier Foundation, these technologies carry the risk of misuse, errors, and potential chilling effects on lawful activities given that individuals can be surveilled without notification or warrant.
Moreover, in 2022 alone, more than 80% of the data collected by these systems was deemed not relevant for investigative purposes, according to a report from the UCLA's Center for Critical Internet Inquiry. People across the country are inadvertently becoming part of extensive databases, often without their consent or knowledge. This data can be sold, shared, or leaked, posing great risks to individual privacy and safety.
The real question is, where does it end? Once we allow warrantless surveillance to become commonplace, there's no telling the extent to which our freedoms could be eroded. It's time for governments and communities to step in and take concrete actions to protect our privacy rights.
We need a comprehensive review and revocation of all government contracts with Flock until they can ensure the data they collect is strictly controlled, necessary, and used with complete transparency and accountability. Implementations of privacy protections and regular audits must be prerequisites to any engagement with such companies.
Join me in standing up for our collective right to privacy by signing this petition. Let's halt the unwarranted data exploitation and demand action from our public officials and government bodies to safeguard our freedoms.
