The Issue

This effort is deeply personal. Yik Oi Huang—whose name means Abundant Love—was tragically attacked at this site. While the park now carries this beloved grandmother's name, our work is not done. This project is about turning a place of loss into a place of healing, joy, and connection. We are seeking $1.5 million in funding from the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department’s Community Opportunity Fund to transform Yik Oi Huang Peace and Friendship Park into a safe, welcoming, and vibrant community space for Visitacion Valley.

This proposal reflects years of community input and a shared vision: a park where children can play, neighbors can gather, and people of all ages and abilities feel a sense of belonging.

Planned improvements include:

*Remembrance and Reflection Garden honoring Yik Oi Huang and community leader Ronald Colthirst
*Beautiful ecological plantings that attract pollinators and people and bring life to the park
*Welcoming entrances, seating, and gathering spaces to enhance accessibility
*Infrastructure to support community programming and events

Today, the park remains underused and lacks the resources needed to foster safety and connection. With thoughtful design and increased activity, we can transform it into a space that promotes health, well-being, and community pride.

As one local elementary student said:
“Wouldn’t it be nice to have a space for people who don't know each other to get to be friends?”

We only have until Thursday, March 26, to demonstrate wide, strong community support. Our goal is 2,000 signatures.

Add your name today to show that Visitacion Valley deserves a park that reflects its resilience, beauty, and unity.

Together, we can create a lasting legacy of peace and friendship.

(Announcement of awarded projects is expected by Summer 2026.)

Deep gratitude,

Sasanna, Jeni, Anne, and the Abundant Love Team
