Revitalize the Flynn Drive boat landing

Revitalize the Flynn Drive boat landing
The Issue
North Charleston residents are known to walk, ride, bike to this public landing situated in the Wando Woods community of over 600 homes and surrounding developments. This site has been used by many residents and locals to fish, catch sunset and sunrise, slip kayaks and boats in the water- However due to deterioration it has become an eye sore and in a condition hardly suitable for use.
This historic boat landing dates back to the 1800's, used to transport phosphate rock that was mined by the Wando Company in the heart of this community, with shipments made to places as far as Baltimore MD (News and Courier 1884:54). Fast forward to present day- The landing was adopted by SCDNR's Ashley River Scenic Advisory Council (ARSAC) after Wando Woods petitioned to designate this section of the Ashley as a “scenic” river back in 1999. In 2003, the “Wando Woods/ Flynn st.” Landing was made public and posted on SCDNR’s website as a public landing- (https://www.dnr.sc.gov/water/river/scenic/ashley.html After multiple attempts to contact SCDNR, they have refused any ownership.
Now neglected, this landing continues to deteriorate. In 2020, our neighboring town of Summerville recently invested in a similar landing + park totaling six million dollars in an effort to improve quality of life for surrounding residents (https://www.summervillesc.gov/facilities/facility/details/Herbert-H-Jessen-Boat-Landing-10 . Additionally, The 28 million dollars of investment taking place in our own city, in neighboring Park Circle which includes the large all-inclusive park, and new pedestrian bridge have been great improvements for North Charleston as a whole, but we feel that our city officials have turned their backs on the West side of the peninsula.
While any additional parking may be too much to ask- At minimum we are requesting that the city takes ownership and invests in this landing to get it cleaned up, dredged and replaced with precast, concrete or a more suitable grade to improve the current conditions.
Home buyers already paid for this "amenity" here in Wando Woods as its advertised in every home sale listing. It’s time for our tax paid dollars be put to work on much needed improvement! Please join me in signing this petition to present to our local politicians to help us make a positive impact in our community!
