- As a longtime resident and dedicated parent in Hermitage, I witness the struggle our children face due to a lack of recreational facilities daily. My own children, who love this community as much as I do, are deeply affected by these shortcomings. Devoid of productive opportunities for outdoor activities, our young ones often resort to idleness, discord, and even vandalism.
Our community pool has been out of service for years, robbing our children of the fun-filled summers they deserve. The need for such facilities for our children's well-being cannot be overstated. According to the American Journal of Public Health, quality recreational spaces have a positive impact on children's physical health, mental well-being, and social interaction skills.
Similarly, our local community center, crucial for various child-friendly activities, remains under-utilized. The immense potential these spaces hold to engage children in learning and social interaction is well-documented in a study in the Journal of Leisure Research.
Finally, a playground—an essential amenity for children’s development—remains glaringly absent from our community. Evidence suggests that playgrounds not only promote physical activity, but also enhance creativity, social skills, and problem-solving abilities (Pediatrics Journal, AAP).
It's time to remedy this situation. We ask the municipal officers of Hermitage, PA, to respond to this call.
