When I was kid, Harkins Theatres was my favorite movie theater chain, especially the Superstition Springs 25 location near my house. The neon lights and distinct retro atmosphere were captivating, and the community rallied around this local attraction. I spent most summers watching 3-4 movies a week at this Harkins and loved every moment.

After exploring various theaters like AMC, Cinemark, and FatCats in my adult years, I've recently rediscovered the unparalleled experience that Harkins offers. I truly believe Harkins provides the best atmosphere and the most customer-friendly loyalty programs and concessions. The Harkins Loyalty Program is unmatched, offering incredible value and benefits that keep me coming back. The Loyalty Cups, with free refills for a year, and the Popcorn Perks, providing a free medium popcorn with every visit, are fantastic. No other theater offers the delicious popcorn flavor that Harkins does. Every time I visit, the friendly staff and the unique popcorn aroma instantly make me feel at home.

Yesterday, I visited the Superstition Springs 25 location with a friend to see a movie in theater 18. Although theater 18 is one of the smaller screens, it provides a cozy experience for couples and is suitable for films that don’t require a larger screen. However, about 5 minutes into the film, I struggled to see fine details due to the dim projection, even in brighter scenes. About 30 minutes in, I found myself shuffling in my seat, longing to put my feet up and relax. While I enjoyed the movie, the theater experience left me wishing I had waited to watch it at home on the couch.

As mentioned, the Superstition Springs 25 theater holds a special place in my heart, bringing back childhood nostalgia. Despite this, I often find myself traveling to the Tempe Marketplace or San Tan Village locations for their upgraded experiences. The projectors, speakers, and especially the seats at these locations are significantly enhanced, providing an elevated moviegoing experience. Newer films demand cutting-edge theater equipment, and audiences need a reason to choose the in-person experience over their increasingly affordable home TVs.

In the past, Harkins Superstition Springs 25 was consistently packed and was the biggest and best theater around. Over the years, nearby competitors like AMC and FatCats upgraded their theaters with laser projectors, Dolby Atmos sound, and plush leather recliners, attracting cinephiles and casual moviegoers alike. Harkins Theatres has also upgraded many locations, introducing unique environments such as CineXL, The Freezer, and the upcoming Harkins Backlot. These offerings were considered “Premium Experiences” five years ago, but given the pace of technological advancements in home theaters, the bar for “premium” has been raised even higher.

Harkins Superstition Springs 25, with more screens than any other theater in Arizona, is poised to make the biggest comeback ever! It desperately needs the enhanced offerings that other Harkins locations have received. Imagine a state-of-the-art CineXL, laser projectors, upgraded Dolby Atmos sound, and Ultimate Lounger seating for the larger screens. Smaller screens could be upgraded to Ultimate Plush Rockers instead of Ultimate Loungers to retain a higher seat count while still providing a significantly better seating experience than the worn-out cloth Rocker chairs. It’s close proximity to the US 60, Loop 202, and SR 24 freeways, as well as to new suburban communities like “Eastmark” would make it a destination like no other!

I believe in Harkins’ ability to offer a movie theater experience like no other. An investment in the Superstition Springs 25 location with a CineXL, known for its superior sound, picture quality, and regal feel, would entice movie fans to choose Harkins over the nearby IMAX at AMC Superstition East 12 theater. If done right, Harkins would capture nostalgic, childlike joy for returning guests, while new visitors would fall in love with the retro feel combined with state-of-the-art technology. Screens could be upgraded one-by-one with new seating and equipment, ensuring profits continue while work is being done. Personally, I’ll be purchasing 2025 Loyalty Cups, hoping that Harkins Theatres continues to push boundaries and provide the best experience for all movie fans in The Valley!
