Revisit House Bill 239

Revisit House Bill 239
The Issue
It is absolutely heartbreaking to witness the unnecessary euthanizing of innocent animals being held in New Mexico animal shelters. Many dogs and cats are being euthanized because there is an huge overpopulation in our state, and unfortunately, some are being euthanized in incredibly inhumane ways. According to Animal Protection New Mexico, the state takes in over 135,000 homeless dogs and cats annually, and 65,000 of those animals are euthanized each year.
It’s time we revisit House Bill 239, Animal Shelter and Database, in the legislative session. This bill prohibits animals in shelters from being euthanized, unless it is absolutely necessary due to a medical condition or a similar situation. The bill also offers funding to support affordable spay and neuter programs throughout the state because one of the main reasons for the overpopulation of animals in New Mexico is a lack of access to spay and neuter programs. Not only this, but humane methods of euthanasia are also supported.
When this bill was introduced, it gained a unanimous vote in support of the policy, but it died before it could be signed into the legislation. If we work together and use our voices, we can potentially get the bill to be re-introduced in a future legislative session and get it passed.
The support of the public will help underline the necessity for this policy, and show how important it is in our society! We can promote change and save the lives of countless animals in our state. Lend your voice to the cause by signing this petition. Let's fight for the powerless and voiceless, however we can.
