The Issue

We, the undersigned, are calling for a change in the current policy at Discount Tire that prohibits visible tattoos. We believe that allowing employees to display their tattoos will foster a more inclusive and diverse work environment as well as increase work productivity due to temperatures reaching all time highs this year and not having to wear long sleeve black shirts in the back room.

The current tattoo policy requires employees with visible tattoos to cover them with black or red long-sleeve shirts. While we understand and appreciate the company’s intent to uphold a certain standard of professionalism, this policy does not consider the significant advancements in workplace diversity, inclusivity, and the evolving perceptions of tattoos in society.

Concerns:

 1. Health Risks:
 • Wearing black long-sleeve shirts in high temperatures poses serious health risks, including heat exhaustion, dehydration, and heatstroke. Employees working in non-air-conditioned environments or outdoors are particularly vulnerable.
 2. Employee Comfort and Productivity:
 • The discomfort caused by wearing inappropriate clothing for the weather conditions affects employee morale and productivity. Comfortable employees are more likely to perform better and maintain higher levels of engagement.
 3. Modern Perception of Tattoos:
 • Tattoos have become widely accepted in many professional settings. They are often seen as expressions of individuality and creativity. The current policy does not align with contemporary views and can be perceived as discriminatory.
 4. Inclusivity and Diversity:
 • The policy may inadvertently alienate employees with tattoos, making them feel singled out and undervalued. Promoting an inclusive workplace means respecting and embracing diversity in all forms, including body art.

  5. Cultural Acceptance: Tattoos are a form of personal expression and are widely accepted in today’s society. Many reputable companies have adopted more inclusive policies regarding visible tattoos.
 6. Attracting Talent: By allowing visible tattoos, Discount Tire can attract a broader and more diverse group of talented individuals who might otherwise feel excluded.
 7. Customer Relations: Employees with visible tattoos can resonate more with a diverse customer base, improving customer service and satisfaction.

Proposed Changes:

We propose the following changes to the current tattoo policy to address these concerns:

 1. Revise the Dress Code:
 • Allow employees with tattoos to wear short-sleeve shirts or other appropriate attire, provided the tattoos are not offensive or inappropriate for the workplace. Implement clear guidelines on what constitutes acceptable visible tattoos.
 2. Seasonal Adjustments:
 • Introduce a seasonal dress code policy that takes weather conditions into account. Permit lighter, breathable fabrics and short-sleeve options during the hot months to ensure employee comfort and safety.
 3. Training and Awareness:
 • Offer training sessions for management and staff on the evolving views of tattoos in the workplace. Promote an understanding of how inclusivity and diversity contribute to a positive and productive work environment.

Conclusion:

Updating the tattoo policy to reflect modern standards and considerations will benefit both employees and the company. It will demonstrate the company’s commitment to employee well-being, inclusivity, and a progressive work culture. We urge management to take immediate action to revise this policy in the interest of health, comfort, and fairness  By doing so, Discount Tire will not only promote a more inclusive work culture but also align itself with modern societal norms.
