The UK Child Online Safety Act, designed to protect minors from harmful content, should be revised to focus solely on pornographic and NSFW (Not Safe For Work) material. Currently, the Act mandates age verification for a wide array of online activities, which is both intrusive and unnecessary for non-NSFW content.

Originally, the Act was implemented with the best intentions, aiming to create a safer online environment for children. However, the broad application of age verification extends to realms that do not pose substantial harm, such as educational websites, gaming forums, and various community platforms. This overreach not only invades privacy but also restricts children's access to valuable online resources that can substantially contribute to their learning and development.

Statistics suggest that this blanket approach to age verification has led to a significant inconvenience for both minors and adults, creating barriers to information and online interaction without sufficiently addressing the primary concern – their exposure to harmful, explicit content. According to a 2022 survey by Digital Policy Institution, over 60% of users felt that current verification systems were overly cumbersome, with 73% agreeing that the focus should be shifted primarily to explicit adult content.

The financial and operational burden of imposing age verification on every platform also strains smaller organisations and websites that provide essential services but lack the resources to comply with these stringent measures.

We propose revising the UK Child Online Safety Act to prioritise adult content while eliminating the requirement for age verification on non-NSFW sites. This adjustment will effectively target the protection of children concerning explicit content and relieve the unnecessary strain on other platforms that do not require such restrictions.
