Revise the (Personal Electronic Device) Policy in Schenectady, NY Schools

The Issue

I express my concern regarding the no cell phone policy in our schools in Schenectady, NY. Coming from a place of apprehension, we've observed the increase in unfortunate events happening both inside and outside our district that necessitates communication between us and our loved ones. We propose a revision of this policy that balances our safety with our education.

Rather than entirely banning phones, we can adjust the existing rule where students could be allowed to have their phones, but put them away during school hours. In this way, lessons will not be disturbed, while ensuring we have means to communicate during emergencies. An infraction to this revised rule can result in the temporary confiscation of the phone until the end of the day.

While we appreciate the school's effort in keeping distractions at bay, we believe this new approach can effectively balance safety and education. A study by the National Education Association, states that incorporated responsible use of cell phones in school policies has resulted in better student engagement and safety.

We cannot ignore the rising rates of school-related incidents where prompt communication could have helped. We believe that our safety should be given an equal amount of attention as our education, and a more flexible cell phone policy in our schools can accomplish that.

Help us raise attention to this matter and make our schools both a conducive place for learning and a safe environment. Sign the petition now.
