The Issue

My friends and I have found ourselves deeply troubled by recent threats against our school. These circumstances have highlighted an alarming issue - our inability to use our phones during school hours has turned from an inconvenience to a potential safety risk. As we're faced with a new law further restricting our phone use, our concern escalates. We believe that the current "no phones from bell to bell" rule in Virginia public schools needs urgent revision.

Students should have the right to access their phones during non-instructional periods. While we understand the reasoning behind minimizing distractions during class hours, there's no notable justification for this strict ban to be in place throughout the entirety of school hours. It negatively impacts the happiness, well-being, and sense of security of students.

But student comfort isn't the only thing at stake. There's also a significant safety concern. In times of emergency, students should be able to reach their parents or use their phones for safety measures. According to the Pew Research Center, 95% of teens have a smartphone or access to one, and these devices play a key role in ensuring the safety and security of students.

Therefore, we urge the educational lawmakers in Virginia to revise the current phone policy. Let's make school a happier and safer place for everyone by allowing students responsible, restricted access to their phones when it is not disruptive.
