Revise the Electric Transport Regulations at Florida Institute of Technology

The Issue

We, the students and community members of Florida Institute of Technology, request a revision of the recent regulations banning electric skateboards and other electric transports unless they have a specific holographic UL certification. This new requirement is unreasonable and unjustly restricts our ability to use eco-friendly modes of transportation, which are crucial for our daily commute and sustainability efforts. Instead of outright bans, we propose a more balanced approach that focuses on the responsible use of these devices.

Why This Is Important

Electric skateboards, bikes, and scooters have become vital modes of transport for many of us on campus, offering a sustainable and efficient alternative to cars, including those with disabilities as a better method of transport. However, the recent regulation demanding a holographic UL certification—one that most electric skateboards and similar devices do not have despite being rated by UL—has effectively banned their use. This ban is not only unnecessary but also counterproductive to our shared goals of promoting green transportation and reducing our carbon footprint.

Addressing Safety Concerns

The main concern cited for this regulation is the risk of battery combustion. While safety is paramount, it's important to note that electric cars, laptops, and smartphones—all of which use similar lithium-ion batteries—are permitted on campus. It is inconsistent to ban electric skateboards that have been UL approved when these other devices, which present similar if not greater risks, are allowed. Instead of banning electric transports, we should focus on educating users on proper usage and implementing fines for those who misuse them.

Our Proposal

Reconsider the Ban: Lift the ban on electric skateboards and similar transports that are already UL rated, even if they lack the specific holographic certification which UL solutions confirmed is only for specific labels even if tested.
Implement Responsible Use Guidelines: Create a set of guidelines and safety measures that users must follow, with fines for those who violate these rules.
Educate the Community: Launch educational initiatives to inform users about the safe operation and maintenance of electric transports to minimize risks.
