The Issue

Summer is a time for being outdoors, relishing the warmth, and enjoying good friends and good music. On Shelter Island, establishments like SALT and Island Boatyard have been pillars of our community, offering lively social spaces and contributing to our vibrant island culture. They have always been good neighbors, respecting the peace and tranquility that our community values.

However, Shelter Island's current noise ordinance unfairly targets SALT and Island Boatyard by prohibiting amplified music or voice outdoors in the B-Zone, essentially making it the lone impacted venue as other restaurants and bars are pre-existing, non-conforming in residential zones. This restriction is not only unreasonable but also detrimental to the social and economic vitality of our island.

The current regulation stifles the sense of community and enjoyment that residents and visitors alike cherish on Shelter Island. If SALT and Island Boatyard adhere to the same decibel limits as other establishments with amplified music, it should have the same opportunities to bring joy and music to their patrons.

This call for change is rooted in fairness, equality, and the shared belief that music and social gatherings are integral parts of summer life. Allowing SALT and Island Boatyard to have amplified music outdoors will enrich Shelter Island's cultural offerings and provide a balanced solution that respects both the desire for entertainment and the need for peace.

Join us in urging Shelter Island's Town Board to revise the current noise ordinance by amending the regulations to permit amplified music and voice in the B-Zone under the same decibel regulations as other zones. Your signature can help support a fairer ordinance that enhances our community's vibrancy and supports local businesses.

Please sign this petition to make summer more enjoyable for the community and fair for all businesses in Shelter Island.
