The Issue

Growing up, I watched with admiration as my peers used makeup, not as a mask, but as an empowering ritual—a way to mentally prepare for the challenges of the day. However, many schools, particularly private and charter institutions with uniform policies, enforce strict rules prohibiting makeup that goes beyond the "natural look." Students are required to adhere to "no-makeup" or "natural-makeup only" guidelines. This is often justified by schools with the argument that makeup can become a distraction from academics, create unnecessary social pressures regarding product expenditure, and enable "status signaling" through one's appearance.

Yet, these rules often miss the mark. While intended to maintain focus, they inadvertently strip away an essential form of self-expression and cultural identity that is significant to many. Such policies can be perceived as outdated, disproportionately impacting students by compelling them to confront insecurities, such as skin breakouts, that they aren't allowed to cover up. Ironically, this focus on insecurities may lead to a greater distraction than the presence of makeup would cause.

School should be a place where students feel comfortable and confident, not one where they are forced to set aside their manner of self-expression at the classroom door. The argument needs to shift to supporting students in a way that respects their identity and encourages genuine engagement with their peers and studies, rather than overshadowing it with unnecessary regulations.

What can be done? Schools should engage in open dialogues with students, parents, and education professionals to reassess and update these policies, ensuring they align with modern standards of inclusivity and respect. By allowing students to wear makeup, schools can foster an environment where every student feels confident and accepted for who they are, enabling them to focus more effectively on their education.

We call upon school administrators and policymakers to listen to the voices of students and make meaningful changes to these regulations. These revisions will play a pivotal role in student well-being and overall school climate.

Sign this petition to help advocate for the acceptance and understanding of personal identity and cultural expression in our schools. Stand with us in encouraging an educational environment that nurtures, rather than stifles, individuality and confidence in every student.
