Revise School Bus Stop Laws for Safety and Efficiency
The Issue
On semi-highways where the speed limit ranges from 30 to 50 mph, I’ve faced terrifying close calls—slamming my brakes when a school bus stops on the opposite side, barely visible until it’s too late. A car in front of me stopped suddenly, and I nearly caused a crash. It often feels like not stopping would be safer—but the cost of that decision could be high. Every day, I drive in fear—torn between outdated laws and real-world safety.
To be clear: I fully support the current law on narrow, residential streets—especially those with homes on both sides and where children may cross from any direction. On these roads, requiring traffic in both directions to stop is essential.
But on 4-lane roads or wider—where two full lanes run each way with a dividing line or space in between—this law no longer makes sense. Children are not crossing four lanes of moving traffic. The risk of a tragic accident from a driver reacting late, slamming brakes, or getting rear-ended is far greater than the risk to students.
School buses should only stop on such roads at intersections with traffic lights, where students can safely cross. And only traffic moving in the same direction as the bus should be required to stop on these larger roads. This simple, modern adjustment could save lives—of both students and drivers.
The law as it stands creates confusion, abrupt stops, and chaos, especially when sunlight or distance makes the flashing lights hard to see. It's not about disregarding student safety—it’s about applying common sense where risk outweighs the benefit.
Let’s urge lawmakers to keep protections where they’re truly needed—on neighborhood streets—but revise laws on high-speed, multi-lane roads to reflect how people actually drive and how students safely board buses today.
