I am a grandparent in Coeburn, VA, with grandchildren attending our local schools. It concerns me greatly that children in our education system are being unnecessarily penalized for absences caused by legitimate health issues. These young learners should not face academic penalties when they miss school strictly due to illness or any other validated reasons.

The current school attendance policy does not sufficiently accommodate excused absences linked to health problems. This oversight can strain families and cause students undue stress as they feel obligated to attend school despite being unwell, potentially worsening their condition or spreading illness to peers.

Such a policy would require proper documentation and still maintain academic integrity while prioritizing student health and well-being.
