The Issue

As VEX students, we find ourselves in an environment where creativity and engineering excellence are celebrated. However, our ability to express our creativity through our robot designs is currently being limited by Rule R23. This rule, as it stands, prohibits teams from applying cosmetic-only color changes to robot parts, despite these changes having no impact on the performance or fairness of the competition.

In the vibrant world of robotics, where innovation is key, it's important that students have the opportunity to showcase their personal style and creativity in their builds. Customizing the appearance of our robots is a form of self-expression and can enhance the learning experience, allowing us to take pride in our creations and feel a deeper connection to the work we do.

Currently, Rule R23 restricts this creativity. This rule does not contribute to maintaining fair play or competitive integrity, as cosmetic changes do not alter the functionality or performance of the robots. Instead, it stifles the artistic expression of student engineers who wish to bring a unique flair to their designs.

We urge VEX Robotics and the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation to reconsider and revise Rule R23 to allow cosmetic-only color changes. Such changes can foster a more inclusive and innovative environment, where students feel empowered to express themselves and participate more fully in the competition.

Allowing cosmetic color changes would not only enhance the appeal and diversity of VEX competitions but also inspire teams to think more creatively about their designs. These aesthetic modifications could ignite interest among spectators, future participants, and sponsors, showcasing the excitement and creativity involved in robotics.

Join us in urging VEX Robotics and the Robotics Education & Competition Foundation to embrace change and support the artistic expressions of students. Sign this petition to make Rule R23 a rule that nurtures creativity while upholding fairness and competitive integrity.
