The Issue

The lack of awareness towards sustainable waste management and accurate sorting of trash negatively affects the well-being of the local natural habitats and the cleanliness of school campuses, resulting in numerous environmental and health issues. Such issues include but are not limited to: air and water pollution, land degradation, hazardous leachate (water contaminated with solid matter). The pollution has the potential to block water drains, causing flooding and creating standing water amongst the waste. These conditions promote cholera and vector-borne diseases like malaria and dengue, putting vulnerable groups such as children and low-income communities in danger.

Incorrect sorting of waste is detrimental to natural and student communities, as well as violating the need for a nurturing learning environment. We believe that a revision to Regulation 3511.1: Integrated Waste Management to decrease waste and litter in SRVUSD schools will ensure the protection of both natural and student communities.

We, the undersigned, urge the SRVUSD Board Members to accept the following revisions of Regulation 3511.1, which can be reviewed in the document linked below in which suggested revisions are highlighted in green font.
