I am an East Orange resident, and every morning I face a challenging and unsafe task. Despite possessing valid parking permits, I, and numerous others, am compelled to park on distant, unlit streets in our city. As a woman, navigating these streets alone in the dark is not only inconvenient but also dangerous. The current overnight parking rules in East Orange mandate that even with a permit, parking is prohibited on certain streets. This resident-borne hardship is the result of bottom-line-driven decisions that prioritize convenience over safety. Regional counterparts, like West Orange, and Newark, have developed inclusive and resident-friendly parking initiatives while maintaining safety. It is time for East Orange to follow suit. By changing these rules, not only can we increase the safety and wellbeing of our residents, but we can also support the growing population and diverse community needs.
