Revise NHS App's Policy on Children's Medication Orders

Revise NHS App's Policy on Children's Medication Orders
The Issue
My 11 year old son, has learning difficulties additional needs and is also epileptic. Due to his condition, he is unable to take responsibility for ordering his own medication or manage the intricacies involved in such a task. Unfortunately, the current policy of the NHS App mandates that children, once they reach the age of 11, are responsible for ordering their own medications. This places an undue burden on young individuals who might not be capable of managing their health needs independently, particularly those with special needs or medical conditions.
Adolescents with medical challenges should not have to navigate such responsibilities alone. They require the continued support of their guardians or parents. The NHS, being an integral part of providing healthcare, should recognize the unique needs of these children and allow parents or guardians to continue managing their medication orders through the app, irrespective of the child's age, until they are truly capable of doing so themselves.
The NHS App has transformed how we access healthcare services, offering convenient and efficient solutions. However, the current policy on medication ordering requires reconsideration and refinement. Young individuals with exceptional healthcare needs may struggle to comprehend and manage their prescriptions, leading to potential risks and lapses in their necessary treatment. By allowing guardians to maintain order-overview privileges, we can ensure that these children receive the medication they require without interruption.
Countries like the United States allow parents to manage their child’s prescriptions until they are 18, setting a precedent that could be beneficial if adopted by the NHS. The transition of responsibility should be gradual and considerate of each child’s individual circumstances, requiring evaluation and consent rather than being solely age-based.
We call on decision-makers and the Health Secretary to address this issue promptly. Reevaluate the policy and grant a waiver for parents or guardians to oversee ordering medication for their children who are unable to handle such responsibilities on their own due to learning disabilities and health conditions. Please sign this petition to help families like mine who face unnecessary challenges in managing young children’s health care efficiently through the NHS App.
