Revise Nevada's Praxis Bridge policy for educators
The Issue
I am writing this petition from a place of personal experience and disappointment. I recently took the Praxis Writing exam, and my score was 150.0. While this may seem close, the passing score is 156, and the Praxis Bridge score – which offers candidates another option to certify their teaching eligibility – is 150.3. Being a mere 0.3 points short of the Bridge option was a heartbreaking realization for me, as it has been for many other aspiring educators in Nevada.
The existing policy inadvertently punishes potential educators who, despite their profound dedication and competency, fall just short of the mark. The difference between providing more quality educators for our students and losing passionate, talented individuals should not be determined by such a marginal score difference.
The Praxis exam is intended to assess the skills and knowledge of teaching candidates, ensuring they are fit for the classroom. However, when it introduces such rigid boundaries, it discourages capable individuals from pursuing their passion for teaching. In a time when Nevada and other states are experiencing teacher shortages, we need to be more inclusive and flexible in our criteria.
Therefore, I propose that the Nevada Department of Education revise the current Praxis Bridge policy. By lowering the Bridge score threshold to accommodate more candidates who fall below by a negligible margin, we provide them with the opportunity to demonstrate their practical teaching abilities in a real classroom environment, which is ultimately the true test of an educator’s ability.
The revised policy could include additional mentoring or a probationary teaching period, during which educators can prove their competence and dedication. This approach not only offers a fair chance to those who have dedicated themselves to the profession but also supports Nevada's educational system by allowing more individuals to enter the workforce.
