Revise Lockport, Illinois Ordinance to Allow Limited Backyard Poultry Keeping
The Issue
As an Illinois resident passionate about sustainable living and connecting with nature, I am taking this step to request a significant change in ordinance in Lockport. The current regulations hinder citizens from using their backyards to their full potential, limiting our ability to live and educate ourselves in a more eco-friendly manner.
Why is this change necessary? Keeping a small number of backyard chickens (four exactly, with no roosters) allows for a constant supply of fresh eggs, promoting health through access to nutritious, unprocessed food. These chickens also provide natural pest control, reducing the need for chemical intervention.
The process of rearing chickens in appropriately enclosed spaces gives us the opportunity to recycle food scraps, converting them to useful by-products. The manure can be used as natural fertilizer, greatly contributing to sustainable home gardening and cutting down on waste. Moreover, this practice can be therapeutic, providing great stress relief and a beautiful way to connect with nature.
The changes we want are simple. We request that backyard chickens be kept enclosed in a coop or coop-like structure which is less than 50 square feet in area, adhering to all setback regulations. Poultry wandering outside the enclosure should be confined to the owner's lot of record. Further, we propose a no-slaughter rule to prevent misuse, and ban the sale of eggs and chicken by-products to maintain neighborhood serenity.
The intent behind this proposition is not commercial but purely personal and educational. Sharing this practice with our children will instill in them an understanding of food production, the beauty of natural processes, and the significance of sustainable practices, creating a more informed generation.
However, without adjusting the existing ordinance in Lockport, the advantages are merely out of reach. Therefore, I earnestly urge you, officials of Lockport, to consider these amendments and help us live more meaningful, sustainable lives. Kindly sign this petition and support us in making Lockport a more eco-friendly and educated community.
