The Issue

Every day, student athletes in Livonia, Michigan, face disproportionate punishments for being caught with a vape. When a student athlete is found with a vape, they are not only suspended from school but also face the additional penalty of missing 50% of their sporting season. On the other hand, non-athlete students only face a suspension. This disparity is not just unfair but also counterproductive. I have witnessed firsthand the negative impact that these harsh penalties have on our young athletes, who lose out on opportunities and their passion due to the current punitive measures.

Athletics is an integral part of personal development for many students in our district. It teaches discipline, teamwork, and resilience—qualities that are essential for their future success. Removing them from sports not only strips them of these essential growth opportunities but can also alienate them from a positive support community. This is why we believe that the punishment imposed on student athletes caught with a vape should be revised to ensure fair and comprehensive strategies that promote rehabilitation rather than exclusion.

We propose that both student athletes and non-athletes who are caught with vapes should be subjected to a unified disciplinary action that encompasses positive influences such as mandatory community service. Community service encourages responsibility, accountability, and offers a constructive way for students to learn from their mistakes while benefiting their community. This not only keeps them engaged but helps them reflect on their actions in a manner that is constructive and meaningful.

Furthermore, empirical research indicates that educational programs and community service as corrective measures reduce the likelihood of repeat offenses, compared to isolated punitive actions. According to a study conducted by the National Institute on Drug Abuse, teenagers who participate in community service report lower levels of substance use.

Let us champion a more humane and arguably more effective approach to handling students caught vaping in Livonia Public Schools. By signing this petition, you will help create a fair system that supports the development of all students equally and makes a real difference in both their education and the community. Stand with us in advocating for a balanced and constructive resolution for students' mistakes.
